A meta-analysis on the influence of essential oils on chemical composition and fermentative quality of silage

Abstract Essential oils are plant secondary metabolites that have potential as antimicrobial agents. The use of essential silage additives is expected to maintain feed quality and prevent the growth spoilage microbes during ensiling. This meta-analysis study aimed determine effect levels on chemical composition fermentation A total 11 journal articles consisting 17 studies 73 data points were tabulated with related parameters about composition, quality, microbial analysis. results analysis indicate increasing linearly increase (p<0.01) certain compositions, such crude protein, ether extract, water-soluble carbohydrate, simultaneously decrease (p<0.05) contents NDF, ADF, ADL, ash. Fermentation products lactic acid, acetic propionic acid decreased due additions oils. Meanwhile, parameters, it was found able reduce mold population (p<0.01). In conclusion, addition maintained nutrient fiber content, inhibited fungal growth.
